Manta / Calibra

Manta A, 1970

Sharing the mechanical components with the Ascona A, the Manta A was placed in the market against the first generation Ford Capri, which was a huge sucess in the early 70s. Although Opel didn't like to hear it, the design of the car was obviously influenced by the Ford OSI, which a few years ealier was hugely unsuccessful.

With the 2.0 E, 110 HP engine the Manta GTE couldn't keep up with the 2.8 liter Capri V 6's, the Manta in general was a success.

Manta B, 1975

The Manta B continued the success of the A and had one if not the longest Opel model life span ever. It was built for 13 years until it was replaced by the Calibra in 1988.

Calibra A, 1988

The Calibra A was placed against the VW Corrado in the market. It was so successful that it swept the Corrado off the market. A "good reason" for Detroit to ax it although the Calibra B was ready to go.

In addition to smaller engines, the Calibra came with the 2.5 V 6 for the more comfort oriented customers and with the 204 HP turbo for the performance oriented ones.
